Mr. Slocum, age 73, passed away in his residence on Thursday, July 30, 2009. His favorite past time was playing golf with all of his buddies, but especially with his three sons. His greatest love was the time that he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was owner of Dan's Exxon in Bunkie for over 25 years. In his last years of life, he took great pride in growing the best-tasting tomatoes in Avoyelles Parish.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wade and Beulah Desselle Slocum and three half-brothers, Charlie and Huey Slocum and Ernest Jermello.

Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of fifty-four years, Barbara Hukins Slocum; three sons, Daniel Slocum, Jr. and his wife, Pamela, of Bunkie, Bobby Slocum and his wife, Betty, of Hessmer and Rocky Slocum and his wife, Jackie, of Bunkie; two daughters, Kathie Choate and her husband, Shane, of Bunkie and Sheila Slocum of Hessmer; one brother, Gerald Slocum and his wife, Allie, of Alexandria; two sisters, Marjorie Ducote and her husband, Frank, of Hessmer and Dorothy Stinson of Tioga; sixteen grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons.

Visitation will be at Melancon Funeral Home, Bunkie from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2009 with a Rosary service at 7 p.m. and from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
